Terrapin Thirty Year Jam
During the 10 months between September 1970 and July 1971, the music world lost three of its most original and creative voices, all at a tragically young age. Today, thirty years later, Terrapin is proud to assemble an all-star group of musicians to pay tribute to these musical masters. The Terrapin Thirty Year Jam will feature musical legends who played alongside Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, as well as many of today’s brightest artists whose careers were influenced by these historic trailblazers.
The Thirty Year Jam will feature Ray Manzarek, as both performer and M.C. of the entire segment. Ray Manzarek is a founding member of the Doors, and one of Rock’s most original and talented keyboardists. After Ray’s Vibes appearance, he will fly to Paris for another special concert honoring Jim Morrison on the actual anniversary of his passing.
Buddy Miles, drummer for Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies, remains one of rock’s most explosive percussionists, writers, and singers. He is known for such songs as “Them Changes,” and albums like Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles: Live! Buddy’s energy and musical vision were a major element in the success of Band of Gypsys.
The House Band, consisting of Blue Floyd members Matt Abts, Marc Ford, Johnny Neel and Berry Oakley, will hold down the fort for the Thirty Year Jam. Vibes Veteran Matt Abts is the percussive force behind Gov’t Mule, Johnny Neel has played keyboards with the Allman Brothers Band, and Marc Ford was guitarist for the Black Crowes. Berry Oakley is Doors guitarist Robby Krieger’s godson, and was a longtime member of the Robby Krieger Band. Their improvisational and interpretive skills make them the perfect backbone for the Thirty Year Jam.
Other confirmed artists for the jam include the Bernie Worrell (The WOO Warriors), Deep Banana Blackout Horn Section (Rob Somerville, Bryan Smith & Hope Clayburn), Jen Durkin (Bernie Worrell and the Woo Warriors), Fuzz (Deep Banana Blackout), D.J. Logic, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth (Tom Tom Club, Talking Heads), Andrew Gromiller (Organically Grown, Tongue & Groove), Mark Mercier & Scott Murawski (Max Creek) and Robert Randolph. Other artists will be announced soon, and unannounced surprise guests are expected to be a part of the Thirty Year Jam as well. Terrapin is excited to close out Saturday night at Gathering of the Vibes with this tribute to three of our musical heroes, and look forward to many once-in-a-lifetime musical moments.
