View Full Version : Dog Advice Please
My dog has recently taken to whining and howling when I am not at home and it is starting to annoy my neighbours which is going to lead to trouble very soon. I'm thinking of getting one of the ultrasonic training devices that emits a high pitched noise when the dog barks - http://www.canadianbarkcontrol.com/ds_pro.htm - It seems like the most humane method to help train her to not to be so vocal when I am away. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?
Just to be clear, I always make sure to walk/exercise her before going out, and she has food, water, chewies and toys available at all times. She's only home 2 days a week and is walked 1.5 hours on those afternoons. She's comfortable, cared for, and in good health, and has maybe five hours to herself at a long stretch. She just wants to be with me 24 hours a day which is unfortunately not possible.
If anyone has had any experience with these ultrasonic training devices, I would love to know how it worked for you and what I should be aware of.
Thanks in advance.

How old is your dog? My dog at my parent's house, Lily, used to do this when she was a puppy when we first started crate-training her. She got better with it and more used to it, and now she doesn't do it. Course, now she doesn't even use her crate, so.
I know I don't really have advice, but want to wish you luck! :) :cur:
And oh...we have one of those little buzzer things. It's a handheld device. When they do something good, you hit the green button and it makes a beep noise. When you are trying to train them to not do certain things, there is a red button, and when you hit it, it emits a sound that only dogs/cats can hear. Our dog Tramp HATES the thing. Our other dog Frasier will just stand there and continue to bark at you. Maybe the bark control device would work?
She's 6 going on to 7 in the spring, and the howling is something new for her... She used to whine a bit when we were away, but it's progressed to being so noisy now. She just misses us so!
The device I am looking at works much the same way, it makes a high-pitched sound when the dog barks/howls, which they find annoying - it shuts off as soon as they quite down. Since she only does this once in a blue moon, we can't correct her by leaving and then waiting for her to start howling, but I gotta try something, b/c our neighbour left a nasty note on our door last weekend and I don't want her disturbing him anymore.
Anyways, we should have the thing by this weekend and I'm hoping that it works. I love my dog, but I can't take her to the movies and such with me - 'course try explaining that to a dog - they just don't get it!

I can totally picture Tramp being scared of it and Frasier totally ignoring it :lmao:
