Gov’t Mule: This early Vibes Stalwart is Back in Bridgeport Groove

Gov’t Mule: This early Vibes Stalwart is Back in Bridgeport Groove

Sean Spillane Tuesday, July 23, 2013 In the Gathering of the Vibes’ infancy, one of the bigger names to sign on was Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes, who performed at the festival several times with his band, Gov’t Mule, and also as a solo artist. Haynes and his bands were part of the lineups in Plattsburgh, N.Y., in 1998, Bridgeport the first time around in 1999 and 2000, and in Mariaville, N.Y., in 2002-03. But its been nearly a decade since he has been back at the Vibes, a situation rectified in June when it was announced that Gov’t Mule was added to an already packed lineup for this year’s festival, which runs from Thursday, July 25, through Sunday, July 28, at Bridgeport’s Seaside Park. The length of time between Vibes appearances surprised even Haynes, who will lead the band into action Saturday, July 27. “Has it been that long?” he asked during a recent phone interview from a tour stop in Slovenia. “It’s been a while, but I didn’t know it’s been that long.” Haynes said he always enjoyed playing the Vibes, but with his heavy touring schedule and the number of music festivals calling for Gov’t Mule, time just kind of slipped away. “It was always a good vibe,” he said. “I’m glad they were able to continue it forward and make it work out, because a lot of festivals went by the wayside and they were able to keep this one going. “It’s all bands that we love and behind-the-scenes friends. It’s all cool.” Gov’t Mule — which also features drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Danny...
Gathering of the Vibes sets up camp in Bridgeport’s Seaside Park

Gathering of the Vibes sets up camp in Bridgeport’s Seaside Park

By Mark Zaretsky POSTED: 07/22/13, 12:00 AM EDT | BRIDGEPORT – It’s Vibes time. Later this week, thousands of people will start flowing into Bridgeport’s waterfront Seaside Park for the annual reunion folks raised on the Grateful Dead — as well as the jam-based music of generations of bands that have followed. By Thursday, you’ll see huge numbers of people — many of them carrying bags or camping gear — getting off the Metro-North trains from New York. You’ll see lines of cars waiting to get off Interstate 95 in Bridgeport. You’ll hear rumbles and roars where at other times it might be dead quiet — and if you turn on 89.5 WPKN radio, you’ll hear the 18th annual Gathering of the Vibes broadcast all weekend long — from Thursday through Sunday. And if you do venture to Seaside Park, you’ll see thousands of happy, dancing, hula-hooping people, many of them wearing brightly covered batiks or tie-dyes — or perhaps barechested and/or barefoot — enjoying themselv es. This year’s Vibes is anchored by a two-night appearance, Friday and Saturday, by Phil Lesh & Friends, the solo gig of Grateful Dead bassist Lesh. Phil’s “friends” this time include jam-jazz icon John Scofield and John Medeski of Medeski, Martin & Wood, along with drummer Joe Russo and Dark Star Orchestra guitarist and sometimes member of The Dead, John Kadlecik. This year’s Vibes also includes the Funky Meters, Allman Brothers Band guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks and their bands, Gov’t Mule and the T edeschi-T rucks Band (the latter also featuring T rucks’ wife, Susan Tedeschi), along with The Black Crowes,...

Exclusive Interview: Ken Hays, Founder of Gathering of the Vibes Festival

The uplifting 4 day annual music festival that celebrates the spirit of The Grateful Dead while channelling positive vibes from around the nation Thursday, June 20th, 2013 at 5:53 pm | Tess Gruenberg In 1996, Ken Hays founded Gathering of the Vibes, a music festival that celebrates the music of The Grateful Dead by showcasing a diverse mix of musicians and fostering a community of people who love music. Sparked by the death of Jerry Garcia, Hays organized a memorial for Garcia and the spirit of the Grateful Dead, aptly named Dead Head Heaven: A Gathering of the Tribe. It was met with such amazing energy that they decided to continue this tradition. Changing the name to Gathering of the Vibes, Hays, from there on out, would devote his life to creating an environment where the Dead Head and music lovers of the world could come and enjoy music together. The community of this festival, otherwise known as “The Vibe Tribe” has created a tradition and collective love for this annual celebration that knows no bounds. Past acts have featured: James Brown, STS9, The Allman Brothers Band, Crosby, Stills and Nash, all founding members of the Grateful Dead, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Cliff, Primus, Damian Marley and Nas. The Gathering of the Vibes is celebrating their eighteenth year at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT on July 25-28. The line up includes: Phil Lesh, Gov’t Mule, John Butler Trio, The Roots, and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and many, many more. Check out the exclusive interview with Ken Hays: The fact that you’ve been honoring the Grateful Dead spirit for years...

Festival Noize: Gathering Of The Vibes, Mayhem and Rockapalooza

Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule are return guests for the 18th annual Gathering Of The Vibes festival set for July 25-28 at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Conn. The Haynes-helmed Gov’t Mule joins a lineup featuring Phil Lesh & Friends (two nights!), The Black Crowes, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Grace Potter And The Nocturnals and others. “I love playing the Vibes,” Haynes said. “Vibes is one of the early festivals built around the ‘jam band’ community. As we are half jam band (and half rock ’n’ roll band), it’s important to us to stay connected with all the roots as they grow.” Gov’t Mule will appear on the Vibes’ main stage July 27. There’s a good reason the annual Vibes has jam-band roots. Launched as “Deadhead Heaven: Gathering Of The Tribe” in 1996, founder Ken Hays and a couple of his friends established the first festival as a way for Grateful Dead fans to come together one year after the passing of Jerry Garcia. Another addition to this year’s Vibes will be saxman Bill Evans who will perform with various acts throughout the weekend. For more Vibes news, including the festival opening up its Late Night Stage to single-day ticketholders for the first time ever, visit...

The New York Times Arts & Entertainment Guide – Summer Stages – Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival

Seaside Park, Bridgeport, July 25-28 2013. At least for one weekend a year, it is still the ’60s in the Nutmeg State. This bohemian retreat culls its artists and its much-emphasized good vibrations from the era’s jam-band culture, and artists seldom stray from that genre. Phil Lesh & Friends return as headliners in two nights of collaborations with high-profile peers John Scofield, John Medeski, Joe Russo and John Kadlecik; supporting performers include the Black Crowes, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Assembly of Dust, John Butler Trio and Galactic. Incongruously, the dance-punk impresario James Murphy, formerly of LCD Soundsystem, will D.J. a set — but then, at any summer festival, the utterance of Mr. Murphy’s name three times causes him to manifest. Gathering of the Vibes comes to Seaside Park in Bridgeport for its 15th year this Thursday (2010)

Gathering of the Vibes comes to Seaside Park in Bridgeport for its 15th year this Thursday July 26th, 2010 8:56 pm ET By Rob Staub, Fairfield County Performing Arts Examiner The summer sun warms the rocks that you sit on as the cool water of the Long Island sound laps at your feet. Laughter blends into the rhythmic pulsing of the roots rock and reggae that tickles your ears and delights your senses. . .there is only one place where this apparent reverie could be reality: the Gathering of the Vibes music festival. This week, Ken Hayes and his merry band of festival producers will grace Bridgeport’s Seaside Park with four days of music, crafts and camping. The festival is expected to attract almost 25,000 people to the park and will host a lineup of bands so varied that all can expect to be entertained. Mr Hayes spent a few minutes talking about where the festival has come from and what to expect. “Not in a million years would I have imagined that 15 years later I would be doing what I’m doing. . .it was something that started very organically with ‘Deadhead Heaven’ and it just kind of evolved. . .we started out by just having a party for all of our friends, and it was a seed that just blossomed. . .” In the beginning, Mr Hayes and his friends had a concept both of celebrating the life and music of the late Jerry Garcia and to reunite with old friends that were accustomed to meeting on the Grateful Dead tour. Growing from a few thousand then...

Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival 2010 in Bridgeport, CT

An Arts Enclave Interview with Festival Director Ken Hays June 19, 2010 by artsenclave This is part one of an interview I did with Gathering of the Vibes Festival Director Ken Hays on April 15, 2010. In this part, we talk about the history of the festival and the changing trends in music since he first started out following the Grateful Dead. If you live in the Northeast and you’ve never heard of the Gathering of the Vibes music festival, then it’s time to tune in. Now getting juiced for its 15th straight year, the Vibes brings an average of 17,000 to 20,000 people a day (July 29 to Aug 1) into its time capsule to the 60s and 70s when Jerry Garcia was so much more than the inspiration for an ice cream flavor. This year the Vibes Festival is back in Bridgeport, CT, same location as last year when Crosby, Stills and Nash were headliners. In 2008, I managed a beer tent at the festival and it’s probably the closest I will ever come to an experience like Woodstock (which I missed by several years). Four days of an open-air, play-no-matter-what-happens kind of an event, with two main stages and smaller solar stage facing the Long Island Sound. And people just hang loose for a change! Gathering of the Vibes at Seaside Park, Bridgeport, in 2008 — Photo courtesy of GOTV Campers travel from all around the world to plunk themselves down at Seaside Park (right next to University of Bridgeport) and let the weekend unfold. Food vendors are everywhere, and you can wander over to the...

Roving Festival Writer (2010)

Gathering of the Vibes 2010 Contributing Writer – Garret K. Woodward Contributing Photographer – Andrew “Dirty Santa” Wyatt Unrelenting rays of sunshine cascaded upon Seaside Park amid the dilapidated ambiance of the once-industrious port city of Bridgeport, Connecticut. It is an annual notion shared by many festival veterans- why is such a joyous event bordered by rust, aggression, and societal stagnation? The pearl is pried from the oyster while one stands in awe of perfection (Furthur tackling a 24-minute “Terrapin Station Suite” in its entirety Friday night), passion (Assembly of Dust unleashing its Americana...
